About this collection

Indian Creek Page 6

This collection began with an electronic copy of the minutes of the Indian Creek Baptist Church meetings, 1810-1850, which was digitized and transcribed by Samantha Harris as part of a W.E. Smith Family Charitable Trust grant. The transcription was done in conjunction with the Ohio Historic Marker dedication for the Indian Creek Church and Burial Ground. A book containing a selection of minutes was created for the dedication.

The transcription of these minutes, along with the publication were made possible through the work Anne Jantzen and The Indian Creek Church and Pioneer Burial Ground Restoration Committee, and the W.E. Smith Charitable Trust Fund.

Since then, the collection has expanded to include meeting minutes, treasury books, and other church records.

Harris writes about the grant project:

"In the transcription of the Indian Creek Baptist Church Minutes, preserving the context and integrity of the minutes was the principal concern, offset by providing clarification when necessary. For example, with few exceptions spelling has been standardized or changed to modern equivalents. In general the lack of punctuation was preserved, as I felt that a true transcription should not inadvertently change the meaning of statements by breaking up paragraphs based on opinion. That said, commas have been added to lists for the sake of clarity.

Capitalization is faithful to the original, and removing any to fit modern sentence structure removes the intentional emphasis the writer wanted to convey. Surnames are found spelled several different ways throughout the minutes, and were left that way as there is no way to know which spelling is correct.
